It is important for the Office of Film and Literature Classification to be informed about both academic arguments and public opinions on various aspects of censorship and media. Each year the Classification Office conducts its own research on different topics. Other organisations, such as overseas censorship bodies and media regulators also conduct research which informs and helps the Classification Office to carry out its work.
Research conducted by the Office is often focused on the views and experiences of the New Zealand public. It also includes research which looks at what other studies are saying about a particular topic, for example violence in video games or sexual violence in films.
From time to time other organisations conduct research which people interested in censorship might find of use.
